License information

cc-by

I decided to release all my music for free with the Creative Commons Attribution license. That means, you can use any of my music for whatever you are working on for free. (YouTube videos, home videos, games, short films, podcasts etc…) You can even remix and transform my music, if you so desire.  Only thing that this license requires you to do, is name me as the original creator of that work.

For more details, please see the official Creative Commons website: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Do I need to ask your permission to use this stuff?

Short answer: No.

Using the CC-attribution license, I have already given everyone a blanket permission to use my stuff under the terms of that license (give me credit as the creator). However, I always appreciate hearing where my music ends up, so you are welcome to send me links and info about your use!

How to credit properly?

Please make sure, that 1) the name of the song, 2) my full name and 3) my website are mentioned in the song credits. For example:

Cyberwestern by Simo Sainio from bureauofbrokensounds.com

or Cyberwestern – Simo Sainio (bureauofbrokensounds.com)

or whatever format tickles your fancy, as long as the three elements are present.

Place this information somewhere where it is visible and easily accessible to anyone who is interested, for example where you put all the other credits for that work, or YouTube video description, announce on your audio stream, or similar solution.

Doing this is all you need to worry about when using any of these songs.

I can’t/don’t want to credit you because of… reasons. What now?

If you want to use my music without the attribution mandate, please contact me and we will sort it out. I will most likely be asking you a two-digit amount of dollars. If this turns out to be popular, I will look into ways of automating it.. or maybe I’ll do that anyway at some point.

I will not ask for your reasons, either.

Why are you doing this? Why Creative Commons?

  1. I want to share what I’ve done, rather than let it sit on my hard drive doing nothing.
  2. Maybe I will gain some name recognition on the side, resulting in more opportunities to actually make a living on music
  3. It is a gentle poke in the eye of the current copyright industry, who would like nothing more than to lock everything behind their paywall. With Creative Commons we can have a corpus of creative works free of their influence, which means more fun for everyone.
